The Belated Welcome Note
What to expect when you're expecting my Substack.
The first post usually begins with an apology for starting a Substack.
This is not that.
Here’s why I’m doing this: I’ve spent twenty-plus years thinking out loud in rooms - on stage, in rehearsal, in conversations that started at 10pm and ended when someone had to work in the morning. Most of that thinking evaporated. Seemed like a waste.
The subjects here will move around. Comedy theory, because improv is actual intellectual work, and most writing about it is either too precious or too shallow. Film criticism, because my longer, less jokey Letterbox reviews deserve their own space, and I have more to say. Current events, when they actually earn the attention, which lately has been complicated. Personal essays. Occasional conversations with people who know more than I do, which covers a lot of ground.
No single thesis. The through-line is just: most things are stranger and more interesting than the version you usually get, and my hope is to engage with more people outside my usual circle.
What am I building?
The community I’m trying to build is small by design. People who think sideways. Who want the longer version. Who don’t need the ending explained ‘cause they already get it, so now we’re debating if the juice was worth the squeeze.
If you’ve ever sat in a bar at midnight arguing about whether a joke failed because of timing or premise, this is your place. If you’ve watched a movie and wanted someone to argue why it worked even when it probably shouldn’t have, same.
I’m not trying to reach everyone. Just the right people.
What to expect:
Posts will come regularly. There’s a backlog of things I’ve been sitting on, so the early weeks will be a mix of new material and stuff that’s been waiting for a home.
For now, nothing is behind a paywall. We’re just getting started. Subscribe, see how it feels, and we’ll figure out the rest together.
The subscribe button is below. You know what to do. Please.

This Substack is reader-supported. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. I will sometimes post affiliate links, which may provide a small kickback to myself or to Happy Underground Productions, LLC.
